College student Jillian learned that transforming raven hair to blonde is best done gradually. After an overall lightening process that took her natural color down a notch or two, highlights were added. The initial results yield a shimmering look that, with time, could be taken to even lighter levels.

Age: 21
Occupation: College student

Why I want to go blonde: "I've always had black hair and it seems boring to me. But I never thought I would go blonde, until I started seeing women with darker skin like Shakira, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez with blonde highlights. I had to try it."

Hairstylist Laurie first lightened Jillian's natural color a couple of notches and is now applying highlights. Laurie actually knows the stylist who colors J.Lo's hair and was able to explain how the superstar achieved her lightened locks in stages. She advised Jillian to do the same. "If you go slowly, step by step, then your hair stays healthier, the color looks natural and eventually you can get very blonde hair if you want," says Laurie.
