Seeking a look to give her a professional edge, business development manager Florence opted for city-chic. Her slightly heart-shaped face helped determine her just-above-the-chin cut. The rounder, softer contours kept it low maintenance.

Name: Florence
Age: 24
Occupation: Business development manager; newlywed; city dweller

Although Florence never committed to a single cut or color in the past - opting to try a variety of different styles instead - she felt ready to go to any length to find a look that gave her a professional edge. When Sassoon stylist Martyn suggested cutting her shoulder-length layers, Florence thought the change would add polish to her "conservative casual" style. Martyn proceeded to give her a new shape that's city-chic.

Martyn chose to follow the shape of the face (in Florence's case, slightly heart-shaped) to determine the most flattering cut. "No matter how the hair is styled, it maintains its basic shape," Martyn says of his decision to cut just above the chin. By trimming the longer layers, Martyn gave Florence a rounder, softer contour - a stylish update that's also low maintenance.

After her cut, Florence consulted with Sassoon colorist Moran to select a dark shade to compliment her brown eyes and skin tone. Moran applied the color with foil so the hair would process evenly, adding a lighter color to the top front section of hair. "A panel of reddish violet," says Moran.

Before blow-drying, heat protector is applied. A straightening iron is used to finish the style.
