At 28, freelance writer Jennifer discovered lighter and straighter isn't always better, especially when it results in dry, weak and breaking overprocessed hair. She was ready for anything and got a deep chestnut color and a sophisticated angled cut that created movement. See the amazing transformation.

Jennifer likes to keep her hair long enough to pull back, but felt it looked too heavy around her face when she wore it down. At the same time, she wants to continue growing it out. Her hair is brittle from the relaxers she regularly uses so she also needed deep conditioning.

Jennifer wanted a lighter look but since she chemically straightens her hair, she was advised against bleaching (the combination could cause breakage). Colorist Gregory chose a deep chestnut with a slight violet tint that also included conditioning treatments. Here, Jennifer waits for the color to process and adhere to her hair.
Stylist Martyn blow-dries Jennifer's hair before cutting it. "You shouldn't cut relaxed hair when it's wet," he says. "It's better to dry it first and see the exact shape."
Martyn cut Jennifer's hair using scissors and a slicing motion to remove the weight from the middle of the hair to its edges. "It's a softer, more flowing feel," he says. "There is more movement to angled hair than a blunt cut, which is what she had." He added a few drops of VS Sassoon's Polishing Drops to her hair for shine and used a flat iron to straighten Jennifer's new style.
