When gray hairs began cropping up, 31-year-old Sue was ready for battle. She refused to let the grays make her hair dull. One rich, velvety rinse and a classic cut later, she was anything but drab! See how her cut of graduated layers boosted the body and volume of her hairstyle and made blow-drying a choice, not a necessity.

Name: Sue
Age: 31
Occupation: Web developer; mother of two

In the last year, Sue was surprised by the amount of gray hair she was noticing. So many people commented on her gray that she began considering coloring her hair for the first time. As the mother of two young children who commutes to a full-time job every day, Sue knew she didn'tt have much time to spend on hair care. She asked for something professional but practical.

After hearing Sue's objectives, Sassoon stylist Janet decided to give her an easy, classic cut by trimming the overall length at the jaw line. "Hair that's too low weighs the face down," Janet advised. She cut the back in graduated layers (short underneath, longer on top) for body and volume that keeps its shape with or without blow-drying.

A semi-permanent color rinse in rich, velvety brown was applied after Suess cut, a good choice when covering gray for the first time. Semi-permanent color fades gradually and can be easily maintained as the hair grows out. A conditioning rinse was added after the color for shine
