At the urging of his girlfriend, 31-year-old stock analyst John agreed to go to a fancy New York City hair salon for a complete hair makeover. He was nervous about getting what the stylist called a European cut and color. But as it turned out, John discovered his new look combined professional with playful, and was low maintenance - a must for most guys!

At his girlfriend's urging, John was willing to don a robe and sip espresso while some of the city's top stylists considered his look. His one condition: low-maintenance style. At first he wasn't sure about adding color, but eventually he agreed to some subtle highlights.

John has very straight, fine hair and stylist Dominick decided to cut lots of little, very-short layers into it so that it would have more movement and shine. He made it longer in back than the average short haircut, however, to give it a trendier, European feel.
Colorist Nicolay added three levels of highlights to John's hair. He first applied two shades of highlights which were wrapped in foil; then in a very few places, he painted on a lighter color in a process known as baliage. The three different shades add dimension and depth to John's hair.
