As we move through the world on our assorted missions, our physical appearance speaks volumes about who we are. And in some cases the volume is loud. If you suspect you might benefit from turning down the intensity, consider this advice from makeup artist Deborah Grayson.

You're in need of a makeup make-under if...

Your eyebrows are strikingly darker than your hair. If you resemble Faye Dunaway playing Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest, your brows are in need of a make-under. "It's an over-the-top falsified look when eyebrows are drawn in markedly darker than hair," says Grayson. If you have brown or lighter hair, use golden blonde to taupe brown and never go darker than a medium brown. Dark brows work if your hair is dark, of course. In all cases, make sure your brows are neatly groomed. If you have light hair and your brows are naturally dark, a little Jolene Bleach evenly applied for five minutes can lighten brows beautifully.

Your mascara is gathered in beads on your lashes. Eyelashes that delicately surround your eyes in a graceful, fanlike splay are so flattering. But if your lashes are coated with intense layers of mascara that gather in clumps at the tips, then you are in need of make-under. Try just one coat of mascara, wait until it dries, than separate lashes with a metal lash comb. Then if you wish, apply another coat.
