A Tan the Color of a Rusty Nail Is Over the Top

Faux tans can be lovely when they subtly heighten your natural coloring. A golden skin color can make you appear thinner and accentuate your muscle tone. But a tan five or more shades darker than your natural skin tone is over the top. Cindy Barshop, skin-care expert and owner of Completely Bare Spa recommends the following guidelines, "For milky-white skin, nothing darker than slightly toasted white bread is ideal; for medium to olive toned skin, a heightened fawn tone is gorgeous and for naturally dark skin, just a suggestion of elevated color which highlights the forehead, shoulders and legs is brilliant." Barshop offers airbrushed sunless tanning services at her Fifth Avenue, New York, and Palm Beach locations.
