What exactly is the goth look? How can I get this look?

As the modern myth goes, the expression "goth" was created by the manager of the band Joy Division, to distinguish its sound and its more-splendid-than-punk attitude. A huge movement of followers ‑- mostly teens inspired by the music ‑- created the look. Boys and girls alike revel in the style, and all power to them I say. After all, who doesn't love Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees? Goth continues to be popular today, and has even been emulated in high-fashion magazines. The look commonly incorporates blackish eyes, magenta or blue lips and pale skin.

So if you're feeling goth, (i.e., tormented yet poetic) and you want to communicate this angst as a vivid personal makeup statement, follow these guidelines:

  • Load on thick clumps, or "craploads" as a goth enthusiast might say, of the blackest mascara you can get your hands on.
  • Line the entire eye area in deep tones of black or gray-black, including inside the perimeters of the eyes. Go crazy, really mashing it in, applying layer upon layer.
