Today's fashion stylist Stacy London pointed out that Bernie hadn't bought many new clothes for himself for at least 15 years. And while his old clothes may still "fit," they were starting to look a bit outdated. "Ninety is the new 30!" Stacy declared. "So we had to update the look."
First, Stacy chose a beautiful mid-gray suit with a pale blue pinstripe to work with Bernie's skin tone. "Black, or even a dark charcoal gray, would be too harsh against his skin color for daytime," she notes. Her other choices:
- "The pale green shirt doesn't exactly match the color of the pinstripe but they complement each other," Stacy says. "Remember: You don't have to match your shirt to the color in the pinstripe. It's a subtle print, so from far away it just looks like a neutral color. It plays up the color of Bernie's eyes."
- "The colors in the striped tie pull the whole look together," she explains. "The teal connects the blue pinstripe to the green shirt, and the dash of orange is highlighted by the orange pocket square."
"A loafer is the other must-have shoe. Like the lace-up shoe that I recommended for Rico," she says, "this shoe works well with a suit, but you can also wear it with more casual looks like khakis and jeans."
Top hairstylist and Today expert Louis Licari described Bernie's pre-makeover hair as almost 100 percent gray with a very traditional men's barber haircut. He had Olivia, one of his salon's colorists, take the edge out of Bernie's gray with a color wash, which she let sit for 15 minutes. That's half the time color is normally left on. The result is a deeper shade, but a color that blends with the gray and won't entirely cover it. "Men should never have a root line showing," says Licari. "So you want the color to be translucent." With the wash, he adds, Bernie's hair is transformed into what it probably looked like 20 years ago.
