Bernie's new hairstyle!
It wasn't Bernie's wife of 67 years, Irene, who thought this father of three needed a new look. It was his son Zach. Zach was one of hundreds who submitted photos to iVillage's Make Over Dad photo gallery, hoping his father could be transformed on the Today show for Father's Day.
Unbeknownst to his dad, Zach submitted Bernie's photo to iVillage, bemoaning his polyester shirts with epaulettes, socks to his knees and bushy eyebrows. "My dad will be 90 years old on June 14," Zach wrote. "Let's have a 'distinguished gentleman' makeover for a change. You would be doing my father and others like him a great service."
As it happens, the makeover would fall on Bernie's 90th birthday. Although he's 90, Bernie says he feels 70. According to him, the secret to staying young is "to be active all the time" and "to think young." He rides a stationary bike in his apartment twice a day for five minutes at a time.
Bernie was born in 1916, during WWI, and he served in WWII. He has four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He says that he likes to wear "clothing that is very comfortable and loose" because that's what he wore when he worked as a dentist in a clinic. When he comes into Manhattan from his home in Brooklyn, however, he generally wears a suit with a tie.
